Scarborough Film Festival bridging up cultural gaps through entertainment

Scarborough Film Fest
Film is considered as one of the most effective ways of entertainment. It’s a great means to entertain the spectators by expressing the various shades of life in an innovative manner. Perhaps, this entices the audience towards films and they prefer watching different genres of films.

The entire world has now become a great platform to introduce and cultivate great film works through various Film Festivals and these have a great contribution to enrich the world cinema. Amongst prestigious film festivals in the entire world, the Scarborough Worldwide Film Festival has been able to snatch the attention of the guests, participants and of course the audiences in its 3rd annual session.


The festival

The Scarborough Film Festival is a six day annual celebration with local, Canadian and world cinema. The ceremony is solely aimed to change the frame of the world with the power of International films and multicultural cinema. Probably this could be one of the reasons why Yahoo news has called this event as the “most exciting film festival to come to Toronto in recent history.” People from all walks of life involved themselves to this new and exciting film fest in Toronto and left the anticipated attendance of 24000 people way behind. While the shining and glittering presence of numerous celebrities perked up the excitements for the event, the 2015 Festival Jury Committee was also at the center of discussion with celebrities like – Arshad Khan, Michael Barry, Sara Saljoughi and Steven Hoffner.

This year (2015), the 3rd Annual celebratory festival was held during the first week of June and it was the most promising than the previous two years with variety of film programs, recognition and award ceremonies, parties, exhibition, industry meetings and of course, films.


The films

The entire schedule of the festival was for 15 films that were shown in 7 different multiplexes across the city. Searching for Nepal, The Trip, Brides, Life is just a file, The Transmission, Pollock, Now I see, Hydro the film, Emergency exit – Young Italians abroad, Fatherhood, Five Star, Jacky in the kingdom of women, Samsara, Living stars, The Truman show were the nominated films for the festival.

So many films have been able to leave an impact on the audience and that’s where the success of such film festivals is actually found. Along with Jury selections for various different segments, there were audience choice award also. Some of the noteworthy winners of the Scarborough Film Festival are as follows –

Festival Grand Prix – Five Star by Keith Miller
Outstanding Directorial Achievement – Tinatin Kajrishvili (Brides)
Best short film Jury award – Fatherhood by Alicia Harris
Audience choice award (Feature film) – Brides by Tinatin Kajrishvili
Audience choice award (Short film) – The Trip by Grace Wang
 
The entire film festival is organized and arranged by volunteer-driven organization led by arts and culture professionals and aficionados. This is a unique approach, merely seen in any other part of the world, to bring the culture of different people together and the Scarborough Film Festival has been successfully bridging the culture of primly Scarborough and downtown Toronto. In a way, this film festival is actually filling up an important gap in alternative programming, education, entertainment and cultural enhancement for East York and Scarborough by means of the art of films.
